On July 11 our Lab presented a large Augmented Reality installation at the Sweet Summer Night: ILLUSION in the sculpture garden of the Kröller-Müller Museum. The Lab collaborated in this project with students from different departments of the Royal Academy of Art (KABK) in The Hague

This project is focused on the temporary quality of space, investigating space-time not only as a three dimensional environment, but as space in transformation. For this purpose two layers are produced that explore different aspects of the space-time reality. On the one hand the physical layer, which controls the real space and shapes the volumetric base that serves as support for the next level. The second level is a virtual projected layer that allows controlling the transformation and sequentiality of space-time. These ideas come to life in an abstract and geometric envelope, enhanced with synesthetic audio elements and establishing a dialogue with the observer.

The result is a game of light and dark. On and off. Present and absent. Virtual and real. A binary system made to measure for the digital age. The age where light does not mean anything without the reference to dark, and ‘on’ does not mean anything without ‘off’. Where the present always refers to the absent. Where you cannot see what is virtual without reality. Together they form one reality: the space, the map, the plan in which we are.

For the groundbreaking of the new Film Museum site in Amsterdam Overhoek I was asked by Wieden + Kennedy to develop an augmented projection to dynamically unveil a five meter long sand sculpture of the future building. Working with Emily Gobeille we developed a two minute animation that unveiled the building in a series of stages that highlighted both the architectural elements of the building as well as giving a preview of what people would experience inside.

This work is constituted by a white pedestal on which there stands an LCD colour monitor connected to computing machinery by a cable running through the pedestal. The viewer of this work picks up and holds this monitor in his hands. The screen shows a representation of the pedestal with a computer-generated image of a golden calf on top. By moving the monitor around the actual pedestal the viewer can examine this golden calf from above and below and all sides. Thus the monitor functions like a window that reveals a virtual body apparently located physically in the real space.

AntiVJ has performed in the Cathedral of Breda. For this new creation the organ acts as a central part to both the projections and the music. Key events of the history of the cathedral will be explored in a metaphoric way.

Growth is a virtual public sculpture composed of a multitude of fractal polygons that coalesce into an asymmetrical three-dimensional form. The virtual public sculpture originated as a physical form created by the artist by hand and was scanned into the digital world.

A live building? Enhanced architecture? For one week, GrrrrrridWave gave the METAVILLA installation, in the French Pavilion of the 10th International Architecture Biennale in Venice, a new virtual skin. The Metavilla structure was entirely remapped in 3d.

Futoroscope, a French amusement park, recently introduced Total Immersion's technology in their new dark ride « The Future is Wild ». The goal was to insert Computer Graphics animals that will be living in millions of years from now, into different envionmental sets. In addition each scenario is enhanced with several interactions between the audience and the animals occuring in real time.

N Building is a commercial structure located near Tachikawa station amidst a shopping district. Being a commercial building signs or billboards are typically attached to its facade which we feel undermines the structures' identity. As a solution we thought to use a QR Code as the facade itself. By reading the QR Code with your mobile device you will be taken to a site which includes up to date shop information. In this manner we envision a cityscape unhindered by ubiquitous signage and also an improvement to the quality and accuracy of the information itself.

We've been asked to do the stage design for one room of the festival, so we combined ideas discovered in previous projects (Light sculptures and light painting) to do a minimal and geometric setup.This was the perfect opportunity to test the latest version of our mapping software in live condition, and it worked really well: it only took a few minutes to map the 3D dj booth, and then many visuals and loops were already ready to play, when it usually took a couple of hours to produce basic animations.Here are a few pictures and videos found on internet, and we'll do a video report shortly, with more visuals and details about the project.

The importance of technology, the coexistence of the ancient and the new and the presence of the sea as both a calming and menacing elements seem to be the fundamental ideas to the creation and development of this model-city. The city of Songdo is a challenge to human’s ability to plan a large scale construction work and, most of all, it will reflect on how urban society can be organized for people to interconnect, network and live with each other in such controlled and optimized environment. AntiVJ’s will present a visual+sonic piece exploring these ideas.

"Tag und Nacht" is an architectural projection on the Schürstabhaus in the historic center of Nuremberg. It was performed in May 2009 at the "Blaue Nacht" festival. Tag und Nacht basically was inspired by the astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus, who published his main work in Nuremberg in the 15th century. We used videomapping technique to establish the facade as an active player, marking the boundarys between heliocentric system and copernican system.

For the Paris Bercy Masters, the French Tennis Federation asked us to submit a project that would stage the entrance of the tennis players on the court.TETRA Tennis was our answer. It is video-mapping set-up, projected directly on the tennis court. Once the lights dim out, the show consists of redrawing the lines of the court in interaction with the music.Controlled with a joystick, the visual sequences can be remodeled live : the lines can vibrate, be deformed, tremble, rotate, create depth…

In the past Pablo Valbuena has worked for several international videogame and film studios investigating spatial concepts applied to virtual environments and digital architecture as a concept designer. This project focuses on the temporary quality of space, investigating space-time not only as a three dimensional environment, but as space in transformation. By using geometric forms and light, Valbuena alters multiple dimensions of space-time, creating an astounding visual experience.

A user enters the robotics lab. In this room five maps have been made with their own AR. As the user explores the room the maps are automatically detected and the appropriate AR is shown. The user can explore the room freely and view the maps in any order.

University of Oxford Natural History Museum Augmented Reality Tour. A map is made around a triceratops skull in the museum and an AR model is added. This work extends Georg Klein's Parallel Tracking and Mapping system to allow it to use multiple independent cameras and multiple maps. This allows maps of multiple workspaces to be made and individual augmented reality applications associated with each. As the user explores the world the system is able to automatically relocalize into previously mapped areas.

This facade projection was produced for the 50th Thessaloniki International Film Festival (www.filmfestival.gr). It was projected on the traditional picturehouse Olympion from the 11th until 22nd November of 2009. In addition the projection was part of the opening ceremony in the Olympion via life broadcast. The story based on the festivals theme "WHY CINEMA NOW" which referred to prospective forms, functions and responsibilities of contemporary cinema.
