see yourself sensing Madeline Schwartzman book, art, senses, perception
Black Dog Publishing. Exploring this concept through the last 50 years of contemporary art and design, See Yourself Sensing: Redefining Human Perception examines the work of key practitioners in this field, from Rebecca Horn’s object based installations, Stelarc’s robotic body extensions to Carsten Höllers’ physically interactive sculptures. The works and artists illustrated throws into consideration how we see and sense the world around us through artistic interpretation. Whether extending these senses through projections, technological spectacles or even telepathy, our perceptual limitations are challenged and our senses realized visually. Analyzing the importance and influence of body-scaled sensory experiments, Schwartzman reveals the fascinating relationship between senses, body, art and perception.

Smart Second Skin Dress Jenny Tillotson human biology, garment, wearer, scents, new interactive fabric, senses, body's circulatin system, wearable, micro mechanisms, communication system, aromatic messages, body
The dress mimics the body's circulation system, the senses and scent glands. The veins and arteries flow freely as the new interactive fabric emitting a selection of scents depending on your mood. It has its own nervous system, which allows the wearer to control the emotional wellbeing of the garment. Using a theory that human biology can be modelled as micro mechanisms - biological functions such as skin, organs and a beat of a pulsating heart can be miniaturised forming the basis of an integrated communication system so that it rivals nature's own capillaries. Aromatic messages are actively 'pulsed' electronically through a cabling system, to key points of the body in order to activate the smell centre.

TU/e Industrial Design (TU/e) 2001 multidisciplinary staff, interaction design, industrial design, university, school, technology
The Industrial Design course started in 2001 and counts a number of nationalities among its multidisciplinary staff. The emphasis is on ëambient intelligenceí: the design of intelligent products, systems, and services. Over the next couple of years 'ambient care' will receive special attention because health and well-being are among the primary focal areas of both Industrial Design and the TU/e. Because of its broad range of contacts with companies and institutions in Europe and beyond (Singapore, Australia, the United States), Industrial Design is well-equiped to respond to international developments in a pro-active manner.

Voiceprints Pierre Proske interactive, audio, visual installation, print, textile, pattern
VOICEPRINTS is an interactive audio visual installation. A person speaks into a microphone, their voice is analysed for frequency content, and then a number of small similar textile patterns are re-arranged in an abstract representation of the personís vocal frequency print. These patterns are either projected onto a surface or displayed on a large screen and eventually turn translucent and then fade away. The person's voice becomes a playful and intuitive interface to the visual display.

XS labs Joanna Berzowska (XS labs) lab, innovation, electronic textiles, reactive garments, interactions, design research studio, complex textile-based surfaces, transitive properties
Joanna Berzowska's XS Labs is a design research studio with a focus on innovation in the fields of electronic textiles and reactive garments: "second skins" that can enable computationally-mediated interactions with the environment and the individual. We are equally inspired by the technical and cultural history of how textiles have been made for generations (weaving, stitching, embroidery, knitting, beading, quilting) and by new and emerging materials with different electro-mechanical properties. This enables us to construct complex textile-based surfaces, substrates, and structures with "transitive" properties.
XYinteraction-Textile Interface Maurin Donneaud, Vincent Roudaut flexibility, texture, size, choreographic movements, playing electronic music, tactile interface, interactive textile, trasparency, body, musical interpretation
The XY interactive textile is a large tactile interface for playing electronic music. The performer plays it simply by the movement of his/her hand on it's surface. This textile interface allows users to compose and interpret electronic music by choreographic movements. By its size, its texture, its flexibility and its transparency, this textile interface involves the whole body in the musical interpretation.

Zizi the affectionate couch (Twenty121) couch, support, physical, emotional, response, experiment, human computer interface
Zizi is a couch that supports you not only physically but also emotionally. She is a mixture of a shaved poodle, a fluffy cat and an exotic sea slug. Zizi growls when sat upon, purrs when touched and groans with delight when you stroke her fur. If left alone, she mews for attention. Inspired by the fluffy flight deck on board Barbarella: Queen of the Galaxy's space-ship, Zizi the affectionate couch is an experiment in human computer interface, making a move away from the screen and mouse based interactives that are the dominant paradigm in media art works. Zizi's reactions are triggered by motion sensors that activate nine vibrating audio devices to simulate purring. Digital signal processing and behavioural algorithms determine her responses.
Ztretch music controller Joe Paradiso, Dave Merrill (MIT Media Lab) 2006 MIT, electronic textiles, audio
There has been much prior research on integrating electronics into textiles. However, I felt that many of these projects did not take into account the usability and interactivity of the fabric. Much of the prior work is focused on rigid, exact places for touching the fabric, rather than supporting the many actions our hands and bodies can create. Thus, I wanted to make a device that could capture the richness of active touch interactions. These haptic interactions could be used to create expressive music.
