Adafruit was founded in 2005 by MIT engineer, Limor "Ladyada" Fried. Her goal was to create the best place online for learning electronics and making the best designed products for makers of all ages and skill levels. Since then Adafruit has grown to over 25 employees in the heart of NYC. We've expanded our offerings to include tools, equipment and electronics that Limor personally selects, tests and approves before going in to the Adafruit store.

As a result of these pioneering efforts, the company received the coveted Ecco Domani Fashion Foundation Award and the prestigious Cartier Womenís Initiative Award within the first year of launching.

Arduino is an open-source electronics prototyping platform based on flexible, easy-to-use hardware and software. It's intended for artists, designers, hobbyists, and anyone interested in creating interactive objects or environments. Arduino can sense the environment by receiving input from a variety of sensors and can affect its surroundings by controlling lights, motors, and other actuators.

Ayah Bdeir is an artist, engineer and interaction designer. She graduated from the MIT Media Lab with a Masters of Media Arts and Sciences after studying Computer & Communication Engineering and Sociology in the American University of Beirut. She has worked as a researcher and interaction designer in Lebanon and New York, in artist spaces and design firms, with a brief interruption to work in a financial services firm in New York.

What is a conversation like between a handbag and a scarf? How can you mediate their conversation and when is your skirt allowed in on the discussion? As a woman is about to leave her house, her handbag may solicit the weather forecast from the humidity sensor on its fellow smart curtain. It might deliver the news of an impending downpour by saying "I think it might rain. Go get your umbrella." And after deliberating with her coat pocket, the handbag may use ambient light to caution the user if she's forgotten her cell phone.

Through an interdisciplinary lens that brings together engineering, art, cognitive science, and healthcare, I explore the anthropomorphic nature of hybrid physical/digital objects and their promise to be catalysts towards unforeseen discoveries. I design objects to offer anima and perspective: from the haptic jacket that an autistic patient wears to express to the doctor what it means to be sensory defensive, to the electromagnetic field detector bracelet that transforms invisible information into visible data for a feeling of empowerment, or an environment where instead of you taking care of your avatar in massive online games, your avatar turns around and takes care of your biological needs.

The Research Center in Robotics and Bioengineering e. Piaggio is an Interdepartmental Center of the University of Pisa devoted to multidisciplinary research in the fields of bioengineering and robotics, and to the training of personnel for Research and Development careers.

Christien Meindertsma explores the life of products and raw materials. For her first book, Checked Baggage (2004), Christien purchased a container filled with a week's worth of objects confiscated at security checkpoints in Schiphol Airport after 9/11. She meticulously categorized all 3267 items and photographed them on a white seamless background. Christien’s second book, PIG 05049 (2007), is an extensive collection of photographic images that documents an astounding array of products that different parts of an anonymous pig called 05049 could support. With this book, Christien reveals lines that link raw materials with producers, products and consumers that have become so invisible in an increasingly globalized world.

Intensive research carried out worldwide for creating higher forms of materials, structures and systems by providing them with “life” functions, resulted in a relatively high level of technology readiness with several applications now emerging, demonstrating that smart materials technologies have matured well beyond the conceptual stage. Widespread use of nanotechnology concepts and tools and availability of multiscale computational models coupled with the exponential growth of computing capability and the merging of materials science and engineering with biological information, are fuelling the rate of advancement of the field. Nevertheless further substantial developments are required in the understanding of convergences of materials, electronics and biological systems, to meet relevant needs for present and foreseeable applications. The several Symposia featured by CIMTEC 2012 - 4th International Conference “Smart Materials, Structures and Systems” will cover outstanding areas of the subject from the molecular nanoscales to large complex integrated systems. The Conference Committees are pleased to invite you to foster progress in the field by contributing to discussions within the frames of what promises to be an exciting meeting, and to enjoy the immense, unique, artistic heritage and wonderful landscape of Tuscany.

Claudy Jongstra (born 1963) designs and produces unique felt fabrics for interiors. She works together with architects and clients around the world to create unique pieces for specific spaces and purposes. Each Claudy Jongstra design is a one-of-a-kind object of contemporary design, partly handmade and incorporating traditional craft techniques and innovative skills. Thanks to her innovative technique, Claudy Jongstra designs can be produced in any format and in any colour. The result can be used as a wall hanging, adhered directly to a wall, or it can be used to cover other surfaces, as a tapestry, or as a fabric, for example, to cover space dividers.

Lynsey Calder, Sara Robertson, Ruth Aylett and Sandy Louchart are a multi-disciplinary research team at Heriot-Watt University bringing together Smart Textile Design and Computer Science. Intelligent colour changing textiles integrated with computer science and electronics

As a continuum of Costume Choreography and as a result of a fruitful workshop connected to the art and technology festival a-m-b-e-r (www.a-m-b-e-r.net) we created a performance with textiles, interaction, movements, light and sound. Two dancers are wearing ultrasound devices which allow to measure the evolving distance between the two performers.
