Since the advent of cinema, visual art has tended to be perceived as if it were in motion. Artists now create less often in fresco or carved stone and more on film and tape, on the dance stage, or in the ever changing, ever moving medium of clothes. In this remarkable collection, Anne Hollander ranges over art of the twentieth and other centuries with unusual depth of historical insight to explore these rich, diverse visual treasures and the underlying themes that connect them.

Medulla Intimata Tina Gonsalves, Tom Donaldson 2004 public intervention, ewellery, fashion, performance, bio-metrics, technology, moving image
MEDULLA INTIMATA is a hybrid new media work mixing public intervention with jewellery, fashion, performance, bio-metrics, technology and moving image. It is a collaboration between award winning Australian video and installation artist Tina Gonsalves , and London based artist/engineer, Tom Donaldson. MEDULLA INTIMATA is a necklace that contains a video screen and biometric sensors. The sensors (using analysis of speech and tonal range of conversaton) monitor the wearer's emotions to guide real-time video-generation that evokes a sense of seeing beneath the surface of the skin, exposing the emotional and physical inner body. Video is displayed on the screen embedded in the jewellery.

Smart Second Skin Dress Jenny Tillotson human biology, garment, wearer, scents, new interactive fabric, senses, body's circulatin system, wearable, micro mechanisms, communication system, aromatic messages, body
The dress mimics the body's circulation system, the senses and scent glands. The veins and arteries flow freely as the new interactive fabric emitting a selection of scents depending on your mood. It has its own nervous system, which allows the wearer to control the emotional wellbeing of the garment. Using a theory that human biology can be modelled as micro mechanisms - biological functions such as skin, organs and a beat of a pulsating heart can be miniaturised forming the basis of an integrated communication system so that it rivals nature's own capillaries. Aromatic messages are actively 'pulsed' electronically through a cabling system, to key points of the body in order to activate the smell centre.
StudioLab Aadjan van der Helm (TU Delft) aesthetic appeal, product experience, intelligence in products, inspiration engineering, emotional design, design for the senses, industrial design, students, research, group of designer, TU Delft, ergonomics-driven, technology-driven, working prototypes
The Studio lab aims at integrating multidisciplinary knowledge on user, technology, and the product usage context. Building working prototypes that are rich in experiential quality and design tools is essential to the research approach. Prototypes with design variables are tested in real environments, in an iterative research through design cycle. Results from user experience testing leads to design knowledge and refinement of research issues.

Zizi the affectionate couch (Twenty121) couch, support, physical, emotional, response, experiment, human computer interface
Zizi is a couch that supports you not only physically but also emotionally. She is a mixture of a shaved poodle, a fluffy cat and an exotic sea slug. Zizi growls when sat upon, purrs when touched and groans with delight when you stroke her fur. If left alone, she mews for attention. Inspired by the fluffy flight deck on board Barbarella: Queen of the Galaxy's space-ship, Zizi the affectionate couch is an experiment in human computer interface, making a move away from the screen and mouse based interactives that are the dominant paradigm in media art works. Zizi's reactions are triggered by motion sensors that activate nine vibrating audio devices to simulate purring. Digital signal processing and behavioural algorithms determine her responses.
