Aeolia (Nottingham Trent University ) body, protoype, three-dimensional, weaving
This project explores the nature of space and place and will examine the concept of a bodily connection with the land through sketch prototyping of stretch sensors in sculptural textile forms. The resulting series of woven pieces for the body will be remotely connected to three-dimensional forms in the Scottish landscape, combining information from each to create unique low frequency feedback to be experienced by the wearer. this project is a collaboration between many people from different disciplines, most of them working at Nottingham Trent University.

OSLOOM Margarita Benitez (open source jacquard loom) ongoing DIY, affordable, open source loom, weaving
OSLOOM (short for OPEN SOURCE LOOM) is a project aimed at creating an open source electromechanical thread-controlled floor loom that will be computer controlled. A loom is a device used to weave fabric. The loom itself will be a Jacquard style loom. Jacquard looms allow for the individual control of each thread which in turn allows for photographic imagery to be woven. Jacquard looms like this exist commercially but they are very expensive (upwards of $30,000) which puts them out of reach for individuals and small educational facilities.

XS labs Joanna Berzowska (XS labs) lab, innovation, electronic textiles, reactive garments, interactions, design research studio, complex textile-based surfaces, transitive properties
Joanna Berzowska's XS Labs is a design research studio with a focus on innovation in the fields of electronic textiles and reactive garments: "second skins" that can enable computationally-mediated interactions with the environment and the individual. We are equally inspired by the technical and cultural history of how textiles have been made for generations (weaving, stitching, embroidery, knitting, beading, quilting) and by new and emerging materials with different electro-mechanical properties. This enables us to construct complex textile-based surfaces, substrates, and structures with "transitive" properties.
Zeroes and Ones: Digital Women and the New Technoculture Sadie Plant 1997 book, digital, computers, women, craft
In this bold manifesto on the relationship between women and machines, Sadie Plant explores the networks and connections implicit in nonlinear systems and digital machines. Shattering the myth that women are victims of technological change, Zeros + Ones shows how women and women's work in particular--weaving and typing, computing and telecommunicating--have been tending the machinery of the digital age for generations, the very technologies that are now revolutionizing the Western world.
